Mellor Seconds 4-1 Chorltonians Firsts

Another fantastic squad available for the game on a Friday evening for the rearranged KO, due to the Manchester derby being played Saturday. This game followed a poor result last week, and therefore gave options to the management team to make changes. Mellor made a good start to the game in a more compact team structure, playing 3 in the middle of midfield. After initially dropping slightly too deep and pushing the midfield further up the pitch, we started to press the ball more and causing panic and mistakes by the opposition. We then unfortunately gave a silly penalty away and Calum Power making his Mellor debut was unlucky for the ball to bounce down off the cross bar and deflect off his back into the net to go 0-1. However the team reacted in a way, footballs teams should, and that was to not feel sorry for themselves and begin fighting their way back into the game and playing aggressive and fast paced football. This resulted with some excellent and stylish football and Jonny valentine finished off a nice volley at close range, from a belter of a Bassey cross, which was one of the stand out goals of the game. Jerome was unlucky not to score from long range after hitting the bar. Smithy added a little spice to the game and was lucky to stay on the field with his usual no nonsense approach with a boot into the opposition on the floor, who appeared to resemble mighty mouse, but never the less smithy was prepared to take his head clean off regardless of size, showing how fair a guy his is, showing no signs of any height prejudice.We continued the momentum into the second half with a cool and focused smithy and as the goals went in we gained even more confidence. Avi looked dangerous all game and took both his 2 goals well, Valentine also took another. The midfield was solid and in control and the defence looked classy. It was a highly exciting game for the watchers on from a Mellor perspective and the entire squad who all played their part incl all 4x subs, and gave their all against potentially one of top teams in the division and previous bogey team. One of the standout performers who won Man of the match award was Marcus McNulty who made his debut for the reserve team, showing pace and class at centre half, with Longson at his side, the pair dove tailed well and Jamie was able to provide his experience of playing with younger boys.We can enjoy this game, but we now focus on the next and we go again.
