Waterloo FC 3-0 Mellor Seconds
Match report provided by Second Team ManagerRob White:
The preparation for the game was not great, from having 17x players available on Wed night prior to the game and then having to start with 13x players, Rob White being 1x of them and then Sam Howarth getting injured in the warm up. This knowing Waterloo had scored 14 and conceded 0, in their first 3 games, so we were going to be in for a tough game anyway. The game turned out to be exactly that. The opposition had a huge amount of the ball, stroking it about at ease across the back, but due to our team set up and excellent defensive work by the whole team, none more so than Smithy and McNulty as a centre back pairing, the opposition were restricted to knocking the ball over the top. The Mellor defence maintained a strong line and waterloo must of been given offside at least 10-15 times in the first half alone. We missed a number of very good chances to score, and approx. 60mins into the game, they took one of their chances. Again we stood firm, until Greeny uncharacteristically knocked a ball short out of his 18yrd box, which they pounced on and scored their 2nd. This goal was a real blow and was quickly followed by their 3rd. Avi missed a penalty late on in the game, but there was no consolation and no coming back into the game for us at that stage. Although playing a good footballing side, the frustration from our perspective is that we were/are capable of beating this team, and was again a reminder that in this division, if we are not all at races and take our chances then you get punished.
