Mellor Seconds 5-2 Whalley Range Seconds
Match report provided by Second Team Manager Rob White:
This was expected to be one of the toughest tests of the season so far, against the current Div 2 champions and the game didn’t disappoint. We actually started the game really well and played exactly the way the management team instructed, and that was to play our own game and play around them, so not to get the ball too tight and provide opportunity for naughty tackles (not in the will parry way). Boon and Knowles controlled the game from the centre of midfield, we looked slick out wide Parr/Barlow working really well with their respective wingers valentine and Lebo. They somehow kept 11 players on the field, after their midfield player grabbed Jerome by the throat and then shoved him in the face. The ref simply bottled it, as so often we find against these types of teams. We came off at half time 2-1 down, having conceded two sloppy goals, completely against the run of play. We continued the 2nd half brilliantly. We didn’t take our foot of the pedal and pushed for a second goal. We didn’t get involved in handbags and completely played them off the pitch. Avi scored a hat trick, lebo scored a fantastic free kick that came off the underside of the bar, which was applauded by some passing rugby players. Lebo cooled it out though, not reacting. Jerome also got 1, finishing the game 5-2. McNulty was excellent as was Jamie at the back, with the coolest keeper in the league offering safe hands behind them as usual. The game was by far the best performance of the season so far, pushing us to 2nd in the league and the result will have been of note to the rest of the league. These games are what we all love about playing and being part of Mellor football club.
