AFC Oldham Firsts 2-3 Mellor Seconds
Match report provided by Second Team Manager Rob White:
The opposition were top of the league and it was hugely important we got something from the game. We also knew it would be a tough game and without any of our normal central midfield players available it would be a tough ask. The pitch was quite small, so that had its pro’s and con’s, but what it did mean, was the game was like a basketball game. Completely end to end. However we stood up to the task and played well and battled. The ref was awful and let absolutely everything go (not sure he was on this planet, as he just kept smiling and waving his hands), and even though were on the end of some naughty tackles (not will parry way) we didn’t cower and back off. Jubb and Bass played in the central midfield and were both absolutely on it. Jubb was outstanding in the holding role and Bass scored a screamer from 20yds out. We were good all over the pitch and every player played their part. Valentine looked really dangerous and scored two, Lebo and Avi worked extremely hard. Both fullbacks were brilliant and played some fantastic football, but both centre backs were immense. Marcus played more no nonsense type football than normal, which was required and longson put in a captains performance and talked the back line through the game. Greeny’s kicking created quick attacks continuously and also did well. The game 3-2 at half time and we stuck to the task and the game finished with the same score line, lifting us to joint top of the league.
