Mellor Seconds 6-0 Spurley Firsts
Match report provided by Second Team Manager Rob White:
The pitch was very wet and required significant brushing to get it into a playable state. Even though it’s always tricky when playing a lower table team, especially on a wet slippy pitch, however the signs were there that the team had the right focus, when 5-6 lads were already on the pitch brushing water off wood lane prior to the 12.30 meet time. The opposition worked really hard for the first 10-15 minutes, but the hard work and quality of our team soon told. We scored and went up a level in our performance and we played some lovely flowing football in what was quite a scrappy first half. Spurley were doing a lot of moaning and committed quite a lot of fouls, however we didn’t get involved and kept trying to play (Smithy only just maintained this). We finished the half 2-0 up deservedly so. We knew at half time that the next goal in the game would be crucial, and made it quite clear in the talk. The team pushed on and got the third. The opposition then knew they were beaten, and we kept up the pace and momentum and went for the jugular, knowing our goal tally was quite inferior to the team at the top of league and wanted to make an impact on this stat if possible. Changes were made, with Porter, Olly and Mike white coming on and there was no drop in our play, just emphasising what a fantastic squad we have, which is vital to any potential success this season. The goal of the game, was a long ball from Bassey with Lebo pulling the ball out of the air with a deaf touch to guide the ball into the bottom corner. We scored 4 in the second half, with Lebo completing his hatrick. Jubb also on the score sheet and Avi with 2. A 6-0 win, was not flattering at all. Greeny had very little to do in the game, but his distribution was class as always, starting off attacks and play. Bassey’s distribution from right back was quality, barlow with his standard 7/10, longson and his young jedi apprentice looking more in sync by the week. Lebo won MOM for his hard work and finishing, however Smithy and Boon in the centre of the park were immense. They completely controlled the game and look as good a centre two pairing as there is in our division. An important win going into next week’s game against waterloo (currently top of the league).
