Mellor Seconds 0-1 Newton Seconds
Match report provided by Second Team Manager Rob White:
The signs were not great for the weekends game when it had to be rescheduled from the away fixture to the home fixture due to restrictions of their home ground, especially as wood lane, really could of done with some time to heal, from the recent wet weather and games played. However we were confident as always regardless of the pitch. Unfortunately we never got started properly, and Newton were clearly really up for the game and they were getting really stuck in from the off. Against instruction, the team were trying to play through the middle of the pitch and the ball was just getting stuck in the sticky mud, and the ball was constantly being turned over. Valentine did put a few really nice balls into the box from the right wing, but we just never had time to settle. The opposition had 2—3 really good chances including a couple of one on ones and a penalty in the first half, all of which Greeny saved, keeping us in the game. Newton scored, through pouncing on an opportunity we gave them, when Mike White had a sliced clearance, they drove forward and shot, it was then followed up with a further 2x shots in the midst of a scramble which were also saved by Greeny, but the 4th shot eventually went in giving them a deserved lead. We did have chances in the game, not clear ones however, but the second half was the same as first in regards to the pattern of play. For whatever reason we never got started or as foot hold in the game properly and it was really open and end to end. Greeny was fantastic and the main reason we didn’t concede 4-5 goals and was the only player to come out of the game with any credit. The game finished 0-1 and was easily the most frustrating game of football Mellor reserves have been involved in this season. The ref thought it was a great game of football and he said it was one of the best games he’s been involved with for a long time. This was absolutely no consolation what so ever, and the next game cannot come soon enough.
