Mellor Seconds 3-1 AFC Oldham Firsts

Match report provided by Second Team Manager Rob White:

A game against one of the top 5 within the division promised to be really tough game, however we rose to the challenge. We started the game really well and Avi scored the first within 15mins from a slick move. Only 3 passes required, started from right back, bass switched a 50 yard ball to olly on the left wing who squared for avi to get in front of his man on the near post, opened up his body to slot the ball in and take the lead. The lads did well to get the pitch in condition to play, but that just told the appetite to get the game on and won, also knowing Waterloo have played two games more with a 3pt advantage at the top of the league, we really didn’t want to fall any further behind. Avi got another goal, but we could have had another few goals and were well on top in the game, until Oldham scored one of their few attacks in the game to make it 2-1. Ben McGregor deputised in net for the ill Greeny, who was fantastic. Ben stood up to the challenge really well, was confident, talked well and came and punched a few corners when we needed him. Lebo worked his socks off as usual, Longson and white looked solid at the back, but the full backs, Bass and Oldham were the stand out two in the game. Some of the balls played by bass were fantastic and olly was class with everything he did. The last 15mins was tight and I must of asked Stewart how long to go about 6 times in the last 10. We had a free kick with 5mins to go and I was thinking just put it in the corner, however out of nowhere Al shouted to Bass to have a go. Before I could say anything bass hit a peach from 30 yards and the ball was dipping in front of the keeper who tried to catch/save and the whiley Brinners had just come on and followed up like any striker does and slotted the 3rd goal and winner. Unfortunately brinners did pull both his calf muscles with his 30yard celebration, but never the less, it was a huge goal in our season and killed the game off.
