Newton Seconds 0-5 Mellor Seconds

Match report provided by Second Team Manager Rob White:

A huge game, knowing that if we win that would mean we could only loose the league title on goal difference, and meaning a draw in the final league of the season would be enough. It also an important game, as this is the last game prior to the cup final and we let ourselves down in the game at home against Newton, so we owed it to ourselves to put in a performance. The lads had been a little nervous over the recent few games, as they could see the finish line and knowing how close they now were to achieving their goals. The lads didn’t disappoint, as from the first minute they were right at it on the front foot. Playing hard, quick football. Newton clearly had several first team players in their starting XI, however we were unnerved. After a competitive first 20mins, Avi scored a penalty, following a ball over the top and Lebo being pulled back in the box after not giving it up. Avi notched another goal before the half, which was important. We had dominated the first half, but we was clearly still in a game. The point was made that at half time, the next goal is so important, because if we get an early goal it would kill the game off. Well the lads really did take notice, as from our kick off, the ball was passed four times, all first time touches with the final pass from Avi sliding the ball in between the centre half and the full back and lebo running onto the ball just inside the 18yrd box, striking first time into the roof of the net. This has to be one of, if not the best goal in amature football I have ever witnessed. It was slick, decisive and an absolute fantastic finish. It didn’t stop there, after brining Avi off with a niggle, Mike White came on up front in the hole and gave a classy and controlled display. He delicately laid off two passes that were both similar, that in the midst of fast paced moves, after having the ball drilled into feet, Mike killed the ball to first set up Jerome for a fantastic drive from the edge of the box into the net, to make it 4-0 and then did the same again for Jubb, who curled the ball also into the far corner making it 5-0 and fully deserved. Greeny got a slight muscle pull, which was a worry going into the cup final in mid week, but on a positive note, captain Jamie longson put in a big performance, Mike Barlow was solid and showed a glimpse of another side of him, when he was completely scythed down and Mike got really angry with the player in question. Easy Tiger. Jerome got MOM award for his all round box to box play, knowlsey was class again and we played well all over the pitch. A total performance from start to finish making our intentions for the league title known.
